Are you thinking about trying a Disney cruise but aren’t sure what to expect? There’s a lot of misinformation out there! Tammy Whiting, our Disney Cruise Line expert, shares ten Disney cruise myths with us.
1. It’s Only for Families With Kids – This is perhaps the biggest myth out there. There are a ton of adult-only groups that choose a Disney cruise. I do it myself frequently! I choose Disney for many reasons, including the service level, the atmosphere, and the Disney touches. It doesn’t hurt that there are several places onboard that are strictly for adults! For those times when I want to get away from the kids.
2. I’ll Get Bored – This is probably the most common of the Disney cruise myths. Cruises are anything but boring. There are more things to do on a cruise than you’ll have time to do. And don’t underestimate the power of some relaxation time. If you’re someone who wants to be on the go all the time and don’t think onboard activities and relaxing are your jam, choose an itinerary with more port days. European cruises are especially port-heavy.
3. It’s Disney Overload – There’s a lot of Disney onboard, to be sure. Having said that, it’s not in your face all the time. The décor itself is upscale, and the Disney touches are light. If you want to minimize your time with characters and Disney songs, it is possible.
4. I’ll Get Seasick – While I can’t promise you won’t get seasick, I will say it’s not as common as you think. These are big ships, and they don’t move like small boats in the water. If you’re worried, there are also a lot of seasickness remedies out there, including Dramamine, Bonine, Sea-Bands, and more. The odds are good you can find one that’s right for you.
5. I’ll Catch a Virus – Whenever you are in a large crowd, the chance of exposure to someone else’s bug is always a risk. Rest assured, though, Disney takes cleaning and disinfecting very seriously. Handwashing stations abound, as do disinfectant wipes.
6. I’ll Gain 15 Pounds – Yeah, there’s food everywhere! So, could you gain weight? Absolutely. Is it worth it? Probably! But if you are determined not to gain weight, you can make that happen as well. You can stay active even on the ship, and you may even decide that a second Mickey bar is not totally necessary. Maybe.
7. Disney Cruises Are Too Expensive – Disney cruises are not cheap in any way, shape, or form. There are ways to minimize your cost, though, which we discussed in a previous blog post. We’ve also seen the cost of Disney cruises become more on par with a Disney parks vacation in the last few years. If you are used to the expense of Disney parks, a Disney cruise won’t be as much of a sticker shock. Especially when you consider all that’s included.
8. The Staterooms are Tiny – Staterooms on cruise ships are notoriously small when compared to the average hotel room. Disney does have some of the biggest standard staterooms in the industry, however, and they are (for the most part) well thought out with ample storage space.
9. There’s No Alcohol on a Disney Cruise – While alcohol may not be as free-flowing on Disney as it is on some other lines that offer drink packages, there is alcohol to purchase onboard. Adults ages 21 and up can also bring up to 2 bottles of champagne or wine or six bottles of beer onboard in each port. If you want to imbibe, you’ll have opportunities to do so.
10. There’s No Nightlife on a Disney Cruise – I’ve found Disney ships to have an active nightlife in the last few years. Every night, there are activities in the adult clubs that go late into the night, as well as family activities and children’s programming in the clubs. There are options!

Very interesting. I enjoyed learning about the myths–some I hadn’t heard. It’s always fascinating to have the background and seeing the luxurious the photos is an added dimension. While I dream about going on a cruise, it’s highly unlikely that I will. So it’s all the more important that I can look and watch and read good quality content. Well done, Tammy. You sail, I’ll applaud from the shore. Send me a postcard, lol.
Bonniest of voyages to you!
