10 Things Adults Will Enjoy on a Disney Cruise

Tammy Whiting, our Disney Cruise Line expert, shares with us 10 things adults will enjoy when going on a Disney cruise.

Adults on Disney cruises? It happens! And Disney knows it. Disney has not left adults out when designing their ships. They know that kids come adults who are responsible for them—or maybe even looking for a vacation away from them! I’m one of them at times. I love my kids! I love spending time with them, but I’ve taken several Disney cruises without my kids and will do it again. Here are 10 things adults will enjoy on a Disney cruise.

1. Adult Lounges – The nightclubs and lounges on the Disney Cruise Line are great spaces. Many of them are open to families during the day, but at night they become adults-only. Even teetotalers like myself enjoy relaxing with friends and enjoying a good Coke Zero (or Cloudem) with the ambience.

Inspired by the “Sing Sweet Nightingale” song from the 1950 Disney classic Cinderella, Nightingale’s is an adults-only piano bar with a modern-yet-elegant design. The chandelier over the baby grand piano is amazing. The many glittering bubbles are wrapped in the sheet music that, for those who can read notes, display the notes of the “Sing Sweet Nightingale” song.
O’Gills is the name Disney is using for its Irish-themed bars—another O’Gills is found on the Magic. As a sports bar, however, it’s similar to 687 on the Dream and Diversions on the Wonder.

2. Adult Variety Shows and Games – Every night, one of the nightclubs on each ship becomes the place for games and entertainment for the 18-and-over crowd. There are group participation games, comedians, magicians, Match Your Mate (think the Newlywed Game), Silent DJ (think the most fun dance party ever), and more. If you can stay awake past 10 p.m., this is the place to be!

3. Fitness Center – The fitness center is a mostly adult space. On sailings that originate in the United States, guests ages 14-17 can use the facilities if accompanied by an adult. Some of us are not sure that exercise fits into the “enjoy” category, but here it is.

4. Satellite Falls – Satellite Falls originated on the Disney Fantasy to much acclaim and was later added to the Disney Dream, and it’s one of the best pools onboard. The water is refreshing, no children are splashing you, and the lounge chairs are plentiful. I live there on sea days.

5. Cove Café – Cove Café is a quiet adults-only lounge on every ship that serves coffee of all kinds and specialties, along with adult beverages. There are also yummy snacks on every ship, except the Wish class ships (which does make us sad). Either way, food or no food, it’s a relaxing space that we thoroughly enjoy.

6. Senses Spa – The spas onboard the ships are another mostly adult space. Guests ages 13-17 can book treatments if an adult accompanies them, but you’re mostly going to encounter adults in this very serene space.

7. Serenity Bay – Both Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay have adults-only beaches! That’s right, adults-only beaches. How nice does that sound? They also serve food, have a few cabanas to book, and have a bar. So there’s no real reason for the adults to ever leave!

8. Adult Dining – While we enjoy the Main Dining Rooms, the best restaurants onboard are reserved just for adults! For an additional charge, adults can enjoy wonderful Italian dishes at Palo on the Magic, Wonder, Dream, and Fantasy or Palo Steakhouse on the Wish class ships. Foodies in the mood for elegant French dishes can book Remy on the Dream and Fantasy or Enchanté on the Wish class ships).

9. Seminars – All Disney ships, no matter how long the itinerary, offer seminars onboard for adults. Some have an additional cost and can be booked before boarding. These usually include alcohol tastings of some kind—whiskey, bourbon, wine, Champagne, mixology classes, etc. On longer sailings, you’ll usually see additional seminars that may include cooking demonstrations, dance lessons, towel-folding classes, and even napkin folding! The crew members that lead them are usually excellent, and we are always entertained.

10. Trivia – One of our absolute favorite things to do onboard is trivia! There’s music trivia, movie quotes, Disney parks, Disney movies, general knowledge, etc. We love trivia, even if it’s a category we are horrible at, and we are partial to the adults-only sessions. Perhaps we don’t like being beaten by 12-year-olds, who can say.
